The American Kennel Club started the CGC certification in 1989 as a way to recognize dogs who have good manners at home and out in the community. The test, which includes elements such as greeting people and other dogs appropriately, walking without pulling, not being upset by distractions and coming.
The Canine Good Citizen Program also stresses responsible pet ownership with owners signing a pledge to agree to take care of their dog's health needs, safety, exercise, training and quality of life while also agreeing to show responsibility such as cleaning up after their dogs in public places and not letting dogs infringe on the rights of others. Training for the CGC is the foundation for other AKC activities such as obedience, agility, tracking, and performance events.
Casco Bay Dog Training Club is a non-profit organization founded in 1968 and dedicated to the training of all breeds of dogs. The club offers regular training classes to the public for: general manners; basic obedience; “Loose-Leash” walking; sits, downs, stays, as well as help with complex issues. All courses are taught with positive reinforcement and CBDTC instructors continually enlarge their expertise through seminars and training their own dogs.
